France is grappling with a series of unprecedented cyberattacks, with multiple government institutions under siege just ahead of the Paris Olympics. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's office disclosed the impact. Several ministerial services were compromised using sophisticated techniques, leading to suspicions of a state sponsor. Although suspicions initially leaned towards Russia (potentially due to France's support for Ukraine), the attackers' identities remain undisclosed.
A crisis response unit is now working to contain the damage and restore access to state websites. Specialized agencies like the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) are also responding. Multiple hacker groups, notably Anonymous Sudan, have already claimed responsibility.
Broadcom announced they will be merging Carbon Black and Symantec into a new unit. According to Rob Greer, VP and GM of the cybersecurity-focused Enterprise Security Group within the firm, “Bringing both network and data telemetry to Carbon Black will enable greater visibility and control for our joint customers.”
The tech giant recently acquired Carbon Black when it purchased VMware for $69 billion in November 2023. Although both companies will operate their product portfolios independently, they will begin working together immediately on R&D projects.
According to a new report by Polaris Market Research, the global AI in cybersecurity market, valued at USD 20.19 billion in 2023, is projected to reach USD 141.64 billion by 2032. That’s a remarkable CAGR of 24.2% over a 10 year period. AI is expected to so deeply affect cybersecurity practices as to become inescapable — allowing swift identification of behavioral patterns, process automation, and anomaly detection.
Who is driving this trend? Major players like Acalvio Technologies, Amazon Web Services, and IBM Corporation are creating massive market growth through acquisitions of AI technologies, particularly in natural language processing and machine learning. North America dominates the market, buoyed by increasing IoT adoption and cybersecurity concerns. Fraud detection and network security segments lead in application and type.

Writing for NPR this week, Kavitha Cardoza outlines the reasons that hackers are targeting young public school students. It seems a strange demographic — after all, school kids typically don’t have many assets.
But these acts of identity theft are rampant, and they will likely have long-term, dire consequences for the victims. In this deep dive, Cardoza follows one Minneapolis family through their cybersecurity nightmare.
